SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & DISABILITIES (SEND) / INCLUSION

Berkeley Academy is committed to providing an appropriate and high quality education to all pupils. We have a culture of high expectations and focus on high quality teaching for all our children including those with special educational needs. We believe that all children have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum which is accessible to them, and to be fully included in all aspects of school life.

The class teacher will assess how each child is managing in class and make adjustments as necessary. They will raise concerns with parents and discuss how to help the child make better progress with learning. If there are continued concerns they will discuss them with the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo). It may be decided that the child should be placed on the Special Educational Needs Register. Parents are always informed if their child is placed on the SEN Register.

Children have special educational needs if they have a difficulty that calls for special educational provision to be made for them over and above what is generally available in class.

These difficulties may include:

  • Learning difficulties
  • Social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • Speech and language delay
  • Developmental delay
  • Sensory and physical impairment such as hearing or sight difficulties
  • Social communication difficulties such as autism
